I was introduced to the website BrainPOP when I took the Computer Applications for Teachers class here at Chapman. It includes numerous animated, curriculum-based content that engages students and can support educators. What I thought was really neat is that there is a State Standards tab on the Home page of the website that you can click on, select your state, subject (Health Education, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science), and grade, and it will provide you with animations and activities that build on the various standards. Many of the animation clips also include little quizzes after to assess the students' understanding and comprehension of the subject matter. BrainPOP also includes a BrainPOP Junior section for students grades K-3. There is also a "BrainPOP Educators Unite!" section that includes lesson plans, tools, and tips for teachers.
You can watch some free clips to get an idea of what they are like.
Do you see this website as being useful in your future classroom? What are the benefits of this website for you as a teacher, and in what ways and for what activities can you use these resources in the classroom?

ReplyDeleteI also learned about BrainPop in Educational Applications of Computers here at Chapman. I love that you can look up movies and activities by any standard for any grade. It makes it so easy to find appropriate, worth-while content for students. After I used BrainPop in my project in Computers, I showed it to the two little boys who I nannied for at that time, and they loved it. They actually stopped playing computer games and looked up all kinds of movies on what they were learning in science. I remember them watching the video on solids, liquids, and gases over and over again because they thought it was funny. I would definitely use a website like this in my class, because I've already seen how much children like it. It could be a fun way to engage students in whatever material you're covering in class.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great resource that, although I have take the Educational Application of Computers course, I have never been introduced to. I will definitely keep this website in mind for future reference.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a great resource. Mahri and I were in the same computer class, so I had never heard of this before. Seems like something children would really enjoy, and I think this is a great resource for my future classroom.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see this website as a resource that I would use in my classroom. I really like the variety of subjects and topics within the subjects that it offers. I think that the students would enjoy watching a clip or something else that seems fun to them. I know that school can be a little monotonous if students are taught the same thing the same way. This would bring great variety to the classroom, and I think that the students would enjoy exploring it for themselves.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great site to find activities to relate directly to the standards. I would definitely use this in my classroom and I think this is a great place to find activities to give to a substitute teacher. That way the students are reviewing information, but are also having fun.
ReplyDeleteI think BrainPop is a great resoure for teachers and students. Since some students are more visual learners it may help them to see things in this diferent form. Also I think it is great that there is also a section on lesson plans and other resources for teachcers. As future teachers it is so important o bookmark these awesome sites so we can use them in the future. I agree with Katie that it would be a great tool tot use for a substitute teacher. It is always important tot think of ways you can keep your students engaged and excited about learning.
ReplyDeleteWow, this a such a great resource. I loved that it has standards-based lessons for teachers and also is has content and videos that are engaging enough to capture students' attention. I think the videos and quizzes would be great to show and use as an introduction to a unit, as the example video did, on dinosaurs, for example, to familiarize all students with the content. I do hope to use Brain Pop in my future classroom in this way and more!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great source! I really like how user friendly it is. As teachers we are going to spend so much time preparing and grading that we won't have time to research and think of ways to build on standards. This resource will save a lot of teachers a lot of time and energy.
ReplyDeleteI remember exploring this website from the Computer Applications class, too! I think this website brings about several positive aspects to learning because it is easy to access and is also fun! I think students would think BrainPOP is an appealing resource to use because they can learn science and math through games without even realizing that it is like homework! I think a great suggestion would be to give a tutorial of BrainPOP in class and show students how to use it, then they can go home and find a game to share with the rest of the class. This will get students excited about learning because of the fun environment of the website and will also teach them about technology and the content material addressed, a win for all!
ReplyDeleteI used this website during Computer Applications also! How cool is it that we all found the same excellent resource!? What I love the most about this resource is the versatility - you can use it for just about everything. And in the rare event that one of the games/videos/etc. does not go along with your curriculum - I think this is a great site to allow students to work with on their own. You could give extra credit for those who finish an extra lesson - or just allow it during free time as an educational "choice activity"!!
ReplyDeleteSomeone actually mentioned this website to me the other day, but I never actually checked it out. This website has so many resources for all subjects in the curriculum. It even has the state standards right at your fingertips, so that you do not have to open another page. Not only can you use it as a teacher, but students can also benefit from this website as well! Great resource!
ReplyDeleteThis site is a very interactive site that can be useful in my classroom! i liked how the website allows educators to search for information through the standards and how it provides teaching resources. What I also found interesting were the videos it contains. These videos can be used in the classroom so that students have a visual of what is being learned. I really liked this website because it also provides resources for various subjects. By going to this site I can find information on the core curriculum as well as the arts and how to incorporate them into the the class.
